Group Coaching

Group coaching is the art and science of providing coaching to 2 to 7 people simultaneously so that they are not only learning from the discussion between themselves and the coach, but both are leveraging their learning and contribution to the discussion in a way that engages and benefits all members of the group for the benefit of the whole group. Our group coaching is targeted to highly motivated professionals that are successful and excited (for the most part) about your work:

Managance Approach to Group Coaching

Managance builds relationships with our clients and colleagues in the nonprofit sector with the intention of inspiring and collecting interested participants for coaching groups. Once we identify 3 individuals from the same professional cohort with a similar professional interest we will invite them into an exploratory conversation to understand the best way to frame a group that will meet their needs. We use that input to develop a group offering and to launch a group. The optimal size of a Managance coaching group is 5-7 individuals. During each coaching conversation we create a confidential, supported and trusting environment where the coach guides participants in stretching their thinking and sharing ideas and feedback generously with colleagues.

Between calls we support individual group members in experimenting with small or large actions between sessions that advance their objectives. Group members can agree to meet one or more additional times per month without the coach to check in and continue assisting each other. Individual members can also access the coach for two 30-minute laser coaching sessions each month and get support via email as needed. At the beginning of group we seek permission to record all the conversations so we can share them shortly after each group; this way anyone that couldn’t attend can still get value from hearing the discussion.

Customized Group Coaching Options & Topics

The minimum initial commitment is 3-months and/or 6-months for a coaching group. At the end of the initial period we will explore the interest of group members in staying together for additional support. Prior to launching a customized coaching group we will seek input with a brief survey or focus group via conference call to potential participants. We use responses to the following few questions to develop customized group coaching offerings.

1) Where are you experiencing the most stress in right now?

2) What issues/topics would you be most interested in working on that would benefit you and your organization?

3) What would make it feasible for you to join a group led by a professional coach and made up of 5-6 peers who are successful?

4) Please let us know if any of the following additional topics would be interest. Other leaders like you have suggested these and can be further customized.

  • Organizing for Advocacy with Impact
  • Combating “Loneliness” at the Top
  • Extra Support for Executive Directors
  • ustaining Leadership from Within
  • Supporting Staff to Achieve their Potential
  • Inspiring A Board People Want to Join

Standard Group Coaching Topics

Managance offers coaching groups for 6-months each in the following areas:

  • Revealing Organizational Culture To Positively Impact Performance: In this group, participants explore how to implement the Revealing Organizational Culture (ROC) process in the new book “The Nonprofit Organizational Culture Guide: Revealing The Hidden Truths That Impact Performance” (Teegarden, Hinden & Sturm 2010), and learn how to use the information from the process to develop effective management strategies. During orientation, group members will receive a signed copy of the book.
  • Energy Leadership & Sustaining Leadership From Within: In this group participants use the Energy Leadership development system to strengthen their capacity as nonprofit leaders and advocates for impact in their organization and in their communities. This coaching group will expand on the Energy Leadership debrief and cover such issues as leadership strengths and gaps, removing barriers to success, emotional intelligence, dynamic communication, influencing others, problem solving, productivity, high energy relationships, and health and wellness. This program may be offered for a full-year.
  • Writing with Impact: In partnership with writing coaching Dalya Massachi, participants work on specific writing projects to create powerful pieces that tell their stories and promote their cause. It includes a copy of the book “Writing To Make A Difference: 25 Powerful Techniques To Boost Your Community Impact” (Massachi 2010). During orientation, group members will receive a signed copy of the book.
  • Board Development For An Executive Director & A Board Committee: In this group board leaders and the executive director agree on a specific objective to work on together. Examples of popular topics include but are not limited to board operations planning, board leadership/succession planning, relationship building and executive committee functioning. Reading materials are adapted from a variety of resources including BoardSource.
